Obituary for William H. Mahan, Jr.
William Henry Mahan Jr., 86, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, Virginia. He was the devoted husband to the late Mary Lou (Moore) for 35 years and was born on February 6, 1931, in Pittsylvania, Virginia. The son of William Henry Mahan Sr. and Bessie (Prunty) Mahan he resided in McKenney, Virginia for most of his life.
An Army veteran who fought bravely in the Korean War he served his country faithfully on active duty and active reserves for 33 years and rose to the distinguished rank of Master Sergeant before his honorable discharge and retirement in February 1991. During his tenure in the military, he received the Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars, the National Defense Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal.
He was employed at Central State Hospital for 30 years before retiring as a supervisor on the hospitals Forensic Unit. He also retired from the Crater District Area on Aging where he worked part-time for ten years as a transportation specialist.
He is survived by his three children: Odessa Mahan Lewis, Edwin Harold Mahan (Kay), and Wendell Arkell Mahan (Heather). He is also survived by three granddaughters Schikeenia Lewis, Sydney Mahan, and Maegan Mahan, as well as two great-grandchildren, Tai’J Lewis and C’ani Jones, a devoted Niece, Carolyn Smith (Harry) and was the grandfather of the late Ryan Edwin Mahan. He was the brother of Evelyn Blackwell, Howard Mahan, the late Louise Taylor(Thomas) and the late Richard Mahan.
Funeral services will be held on Monday June 12, 2017 at 12:00PM at Shiloh Baptist Church (Dinwiddie), 4610 Darvills Rd, Blackstone, VA 23824. The pastor Rev. David L. Banks will officiate. Interment will be at Dinwiddie Memorial Park. The family will assemble at the home on Margarita Ragsdale Street at 11AM. Viewing will be at the W. L. Fields Funeral Home on Sunday from 12PM to 7PM.
