Obituary for Arnita A. Jordan
Arnita Ann Jordan was born to Raymond Lee Jordan and Catherine Booker Jordan on October 7, 1944. She was their second child. The family of four consisting of her parents, Arnita, and older brother, Wesley, lived on Wilcox Street, Petersburg Virginia.
In 1947, the family moved to Church Road (Dinwiddie County), Virginia. From the 1st through the 7th grade, the children attended Marmora Elementary School, a one room, one teacher, school. The one teacher was none other than the courageous and talented Catherine Jordan, their mother. At an early age, Arnita was baptized and became an active member of the Springfield Baptist Church, Sutherland, Virginia. She sang in the youth choir. While Catherine taught school, Raymond worked as an accomplished brickmason.
Arnita graduated from Southside High School, Dinwiddie County in 1962. She attended Howard University, and later earned undergraduate and master’s degrees from Virginia State College, Petersburg Virginia.
In 1970, Arnita married Tyrone Nelson whom she had known since their school days at Southside High. They made their home in Ettrick, Virginia. The couple was blessed with a son, Stefan Alphonso Nelson whom they dotted on. Arnita and Tyrone were active members in the Charlemagne Social Club in Petersburg.
Arnita worked at Central State Hospital from a young age to retirement. There, she was an excellent social worker. In addition, she was an income tax consultant at Ettrick Tax Service, Ettrick Virginia, an established company whose proprietor is Margie Jordan Starks.
Growing up, Arnita was a delightful, adorable, pretty girl. She was a favorite of many relatives who fondly gave her the nickname “Squeak”. It stuck. She grew into a smart, strong willed Christian woman. As for her interests and hobbies, suffice it to say that hopefully there is a casino in heaven!
Arnita’s strong will and determination came to the fore in her courageous fight against an illness that would have ended the life of a lesser foe much sooner. Her friends and relatives were amazed at her spirited fight. However, her suffering was ended on September 18, 2018 when God, in his infinite wisdom, called her, home.
Arnita Jordan leaves many relatives and friends to mourn, including, but not limited to: Stefan Alphonso Nelson (Cynthia), son; Wesley L. Jordan, brother; granddaughters: Olivia Morales, and Adrienne Costigan; nephew Wesley R Jordan; special cousins: Samelia “Mimi” Spicely, Claristine Moore, Margie Jordan Starks, Beverly Moore, and Janice Jordan Luna (She was like a sister); very special friend Mable Crump Turner, and a host of praying relatives (including at least 26 first cousins).

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday September 25, 2018 at 1PM at Shiloh Baptist Church, 4610 Darvills Rd, Blackstone VA, 23824. Rev. Keith Parham will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will be on Monday from 12PM – 7PM at the funeral home. Online tributes can be left at
