On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, God picked a beautiful rose from his garden, our beloved Deaconess Mary Jane Buford Morgan. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend.
Deaconess Mary Jane Buford Morgan, affectionately known as “Mary Jane” was born on January 16, 1941, to the late Sterling Welton Buford Sr. and Hattie Virginia Jones-Buford of Brunswick County. Mary Jane attended James Soloman Russell in Brunswick County. Shortly after high school, Mary Jane obtained her license as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). She worked in that profession for over 25 years at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Blackstone, VA. After leaving Heritage Hall Nursing Home, she decided to stay home full time to care for her family and grandchildren.
She confessed her life to Christ at an early age and joined Hickory Run Baptist Church in Rawlings, Virginia where she served as Trustee, Deaconess, and Greeter. She was also a member of the Senior Choir and Missionary Ministry. Mary Jane enjoyed watching her daytime soap operas, completing cross word puzzle books, studying the Bible, and collecting elephant statues and refrigerator magnets. Staying up late to watch Family Feud with Steve Harvey and spending time with her grandkids and family was the highlight of her life.
Along with her parents Sterling and Hattie Buford Sr., Mary Jane was greeted at Heaven’s gate by her husband Paul Morgan Sr. of 64 years; three children James Morgan, Constance Morgan, and Matthew Morgan; siblings India Buford, Rebecca Buford, Sterling Buford Jr. and Josephine Rhodes; sister in-laws Rebecca Morgan, Gaynell Buford, Mabel Harris, Shirley Ann Fields, and Catherine Fields; brother in-law, Preston Morgan Sr.; and her favorite son-in-law Charlie H. Bragg Jr.
Mary Jane leaves to cherish her memories her two daughters, Carolyn Bragg of McKenney, VA and Barbara (Earl) McCain of Dinwiddie, VA; two sons Harry Morgan and Paul Morgan of McKenney, VA; seven grandchildren, Demetria (Gregory) Newby of Chester, VA, Derrick Morgan of Dinwiddie, VA, LaQuita Morgan of Dinwiddie, VA, LaTeisha (Montreal) Morgan of Chesterfield, VA, A’Dante Morgan of Matoaca, VA, Cartrelia Morgan of Richmond, VA, and Kevin (Shanelle) McCain of Washington, D.C; six great grandchildren, Mariyah Newby and Jaiden Newby of Chester, VA; Lay’Vion Moore, Harmony Moore and Treal Moore of Chesterfield, VA; and Morgan Rosser of Richmond, VA. Devoted nieces Evon Rhodes of Petersburg, VA, Laverne Harris of Jarratt, VA, and Nicole Mayo of Rawlings, VA; devoted nephews Glenwood Rhodes of Richmond, VA, Thomas Buford, Elvis Buford, and James Buford of Rawlings, VA; cousins Rosa Pegram of Rawlings, VA and Thelma Pegram of Martinsburg, WV; friend Sue A. Marks of McKenney, VA; and neighbors of Lew Jones Village. A host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
