Obituary for Mary E. Mills
Mary Edmonia Mills of Hampton, Va., slipped into eternal rest on October 8, 2015. Mary was the first born of the late James Mills and Nannie Berry Mills. She was born on August 16, 1934. She attended Brunswick County Public Schools and graduated from James Solomon Russell High School in June of 1954. She accepted Christ as her Savior at Hickory Run Baptist Church in Rawlings, Va., at an early age. Mary had a love for classical music. She enjoyed playing the piano and teaching some of her receptive younger siblings to play the piano. After graduation from High School, Mary moved to New York where she worked and enjoyed her life. In her early years she worked as a governess, which allowed her the flexibility of traveling to many places. Mary loved the finer things of life and would let everyone know that cost mattered.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, James and Nannie Mills; three brothers, Delano, James and Floyd Mills; a sister, Martha Parham; and brothers-in-law, George Parham, Bill Halstrunck and Harold Perry. She leaves to cherish her memories three sisters, Sallisteen Halstrunck, Nan Mills-Smith (Don), and Marion Mills-Perry; and two brothers, Paul Mills and Donald Mills. Also left to mourn her passing is a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mary lived her life to the fullest. In her later years she rotated among her three sisters. Mary had a relationship with food. She loved tasty and aromatic foods. She never missed a holiday meal at one of her sister's home. She loved art and fine wines. Mary will be missed. She will remain in our hearts forever.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 12, 2015, at 11 a.m. at the Hickory Run Baptist Church in Rawlings, Va., with the Reverend James Jeter Eulogizing. Internment will be private in the Mills Family Cemetery. Viewing will be on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
